April 2: Holy Thursday

Mass & Pilgrimage to Altars of Repose | JPII Newman Oratory | 8:30 p.m.

At this liturgy, we commemorate the Last Supper when Jesus establishes the sacrament of Holy Communion and the institution of the priesthood.

Following Mass on Thursday, we will travel as a group to other altars of repose across Omaha. We will be organizing carpools if you would like to join.

April 3: Good Friday

Good Friday Service | JPII Newman Oratory | 3:00 p.m.

Good Friday is a day of fasting within the Church. This is the only day of the year when there is no Mass celebrated. However, there is a service where we remember Jesus’ arrest, trial, and crucifixion.

Tenebrae | JPII Newman Oratory | 9:00 p.m.

A solemn para-liturgical service traditionally held on Good Friday night. Its name means “darkness” in Latin. In this service—a series of candles are gradually extinguished while psalms and readings recount Christ’s suffering and death. The church grows progressively darker, symbolizing the abandonment of Jesus and the mourning of the world.

April 4: Holy Saturday

Easter Vigil | JPII Newman Oratory | 8:30 p.m.

Saturday is often a day of preparing for the Easter Vigil and Easter celebrations, but it is also a day to remember Jesus in the tomb before his resurrection. The Easter Vigil is celebrated after sunset and begins outside where the Easter fire is enkindled, and the Paschal candle is blessed and lit.

After the Easter Vigil Mass, all are invited to a Resurrection Party in the Commons beginning around 11:00 p.m.

April 5: Easter Sunday
